Vertical Jump Skills
Being able to dunk a basketball is the goal of anyone who plays basketball. The thrill of finally getting high enough off the ground to stuff that ball through the hoop is the greatest. Unfortunately most are unable to do that due to lack of technique or the lack of strength. Both can be greatly improved, technique possibly being the easiest to accomplish. In addition to being able to dunk, you would increase your rebounding and shot block potential improving both your offense and defense abilities.
When you begin your program to jump higher, you need to keep in mind that this is not an overnight deal. This will be something that should be a long term goal. You may see slow progress but do not give up, you will improve. You will need to work on developing the larger muscle groups of the upper legs, the glutes and hamstrings. Also work on the calves, upper body and your core. Keep your muscles in balance, if you are weak in one area, train that to catch up with the rest of the muscle groups. Not only do you need to strengthen the legs, they need explosive strength to be able to launch you off the ground.
Doing squats and dead lifts will build a base of strength with which to work off of. Other basic exercises like lunges will help. When you get stronger you can start doing plyometric exercises such as box jumps, depth jumps and others, these will help build the explosive power that you need. As you gain strength you will find that you will jump higher. Important, only work out 3 or 4 times per week to give yourself time to recover. If you over train or get injured, you may have to take time off, all the work you did will be for nothing. A little bit of searching on line can give you a lot of ideas for training
